Q. I am printing barcodes which look good and read well with my barcode reader, but a customer says that they fail his verifier tests. What does this mean?
A. Barcode verifiers are specialist barcode reading devices that test barcodes against a set quality standard. They test for such things as adequate 'quiet zones' on each side of the barcode, the widths and sharpness of the printed bars, and overall contrast.
Meeting the quality standard ensures that the barcode can be read by barcode readers of any vintage. You might have a state-of-the-art barcode reader that can cope with damaged barcodes, but another user might be using a barcode scanner more than 10 years old.
Q. I have a low-cost verifier and my barcodes pass my verifier tests, but a customer says that the barcodes fail his verifier tests. What can I do about this?
A. If the verifier was low cost it might be a traditional one that tests barcodes against an earlier quality standard. Your customer is probably using an ANSI standard verifier that grades the barcode quality against the latest standard. So you might have to buy a new verifier.
Verification is quite a complicated area. Rotech can help you choose the best solution.
