The Apsolute Thermal Inkjet printer uses a HP cartridge with unique alcohol-based ink it can do most of the jobs a continuous inkjet printer (CIJ) can, but with no mess and while requiring no maintenance.
Anyone selling a CIJ printer knows that there are significant revenues to be enjoyed after the sale by way of consumables, spares parts and service contracts, so they can afford to ease the price of the equipment – make it a loss leader, so to speak.
We have found that the best way to lay bare the true cost of ownership of a system over, say, a five year period is to look at the cost of leasing. For us this is a simple exercise: we know what the cost of the printer is and, as there is no maintenance, no requirement for any spare parts, and no need for a service contract, the cost over the five year period does not change. The monthly cost is a simple percentage of the equipment value and starts at £175.00 per month for a five year lease.
Ask the same question of a CIJ company, and that loss-leading product has to have service contracts and spare parts added – after all, once you’ve agreed to supply a printer on a five-year lease, you’ll need to make sure that all your costs are covered. Suddenly it starts to look more expensive.
