Thermal inkjet prints on foil lids speeding up yoghurt production

Thermal inkjet prints on foil lids

BACKGROUND
Everyone is familiar with the simple emboss code that appears on the foil lid of a tub of yoghurt, butter or cream. It’s a simple and effective means of marking, but does have its limitations. A producer looking for a computer- generated code, they needed a system that was as clean as possible in operation, yet offered good adhesion to the foil lid.

WHAT ROTECH DID
The lines were equipped with the new Apsolute printer, based on HP thermal inkjet technology.

The Apsolute V1 system was selected for the performance of its multi-substrate ink and also the ability to integrate with the production line in two key ways. Firstly, the central controller was able to drive two groups of two printheads, meaning that four print areas could be handled from one unit, saving on cost and simplifying programming. Secondly, a special photocell was used to detect the registration mark on the foil material prior to cutting, so ensuring that the print was in the correct position every time.

OUTCOME
The Apsolute printers are now running at print speeds of between 100 and 110 products per minute at a linear speed of 30m/min, 24 hour per day. In code changes are now made directly from the customer’s production system using printers communications protocol.
